The most beautiful blooms. Spectacular leaves. Awe-inspiring sights at the Botanical Garden. It\u2019s that special time of summer again: the giant tropical water lily, Victoria cruziana, is opening its impressive flowers. For the Victoria Nights on 5 and 6 August, the Botanical Garden of Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig will therefore remain open until 22:00. Visitors can enjoy this natural spectacle in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere while enjoying snacks and drinks. Admission is free.<\/b><\/p>\n

Some plants are so large that they make you feel like a child again. The Victoria is one of them. In the Botanical Garden<\/a> of TU Braunschweig, its leaves lie on the water like green islands, and its flowers are only visible for a short time. For many people in the region, these summer evenings have become a cherished tradition.<\/p>\n

The plant decides<\/h3>\n

Even for the experts, the giant water lily remains a surprise every year. Despite decades of experience, it is impossible to predict exactly when it will flower. This is solely at the discretion of the plant, which is precisely what makes the Victoria Nights so special.<\/p>\n

Throughout the summer, the Victoria produces new buds almost continuously. Each flower appears for just two evenings, initially blooming in a radiant white with an intense fragrance. It then closes and submerges, reopening the following evening in vibrant pink. Subsequently, it sinks back beneath the water\u2019s surface, where the seeds develop.<\/p>\n

But it is not just the flowers that are astonishing. The floating leaves are equally impressive: they can reach a diameter of up to two metres. Their unique structure makes them so sturdy that they can support up to 35 kilograms without sinking.<\/p>\n

A summer that begins in January<\/h3>\n

What looks like a small miracle in August actually begins many months earlier. As early as the beginning of January, the seeds are brought to germination in the propagation greenhouse. At the end of April or beginning of May, the strongest young plant is moved to the Victoria pond. From then on, it grows at an astonishing rate.<\/p>\n

To ensure that young leaves and new flowers get enough light and space, the oldest floating leaves must be removed regularly. The spectacle unfolds of its own accord, but it is only made possible by a great deal of knowledge, patience and care.<\/p>\n

A garden in motion<\/h3>\n

Even beyond the Victoria pond, a visit to the Botanical Garden is worthwhile, as much has happened here in recent months. In June, the GreenOffice at TU Braunschweig inaugurated a student workspace. A new ramp now makes the Tropical House accessible to all.<\/p>\n

The new path along the River Oker already gives a glimpse of how the historic garden and the extension site might merge in future. A new glass pavilion with a redesigned outdoor area is nearing completion there. In future, it will provide space for courses, lectures and cultural events. The Friends\u2019 Association is also very active, having already attracted thousands of visitors with various social events, including plant and book fairs.<\/p>\n

Thus, the Botanical Garden continues to grow as both a scientific institution of TU Braunschweig and a place for relaxation, education, and socialising.<\/p>\n
