At the same time, we are actively promoting in-service training in industry using the latest processes and developments,” emphasises TU President Angela Ittel.

“Braunschweig is at the heart of one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions and has a high proportion of employees working in research and innovation,” says Mayor Dr Thorsten Kornblum. “The Learning Factory further improves the conditions for ensuring that this remains the case. It strengthens Braunschweig as a centre for science and education whilst also bolstering one of the particularly strong clusters here in Braunschweig and the wider region: battery cell manufacturing. I would like to thank the State of Niedersachsen and Technische Universität Braunschweig for continuing to drive all this forward with a constant stream of new, innovative ideas and concepts.”

The Learning Factory – a hybrid learning ecosystem

The Learning Factory combines real-world production processes with digital and immersive learning environments. With more than 25 machines and systems, as well as three specialised research and learning rooms, it maps out the entire value chain of circular production. Here, knowledge is not only imparted but can also be applied immediately. Under the motto “Learn. Innovate. Teach.”, the Learning Factory sees itself as an open space for learning, innovation and research.

At its heart is the “Battery Production” facility, operated by the EducationLab of the Battery Labfactory Braunschweig (BLB), a pilot line for the circular production of cylindrical 21700 LFP lithium-ion battery cells. The production process comprises the provision of (recycled) raw materials, electrode production, cell assembly and subsequent formation, including a final inspection.

In the “Component Integration” stage, the manufactured cylindrical battery cells are installed in a modular model vehicle. The vehicle is designed as a circular product and is assembled and disassembled using a hybrid assembly and disassembly system.

In the “NerveCenter”, production and process data are analysed and visualised to support decision-making processes in circular production systems with the aid of artificial intelligence. In the virtual environment provided here, factory models, mixed-reality applications and a digital learning platform are linked together to create immersive and collaborative teaching and learning settings.

Target audience of the learning factory

The Learning Factory is aimed in particular at specialists and managers in the context of industrial transformation, as well as at students on engineering and interdisciplinary degree programmes. In addition, it is intended to appeal to school pupils as part of the STEM support programme, as well as to the interested general public.

“With the Learning Factory, we are creating a place where key future topics such as digitalisation, sustainability and circularity can be experienced in a tangible way. Our aim is to empower people to help shape the production of tomorrow in a responsible, resource-efficient and digital manner,” says Professor Christoph Herrmann, Professor of Sustainable Production & Life Cycle Engineering at TU Braunschweig and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (IST).

“The EducationLab for battery cell production completes the unique German research facilities comprising the BLB, the Fraunhofer Centre for Energy Storage and Systems (ZESS) and, in future, the Centre for Circular Production of Next Batteries and Fuel Cells (CPC) currently being established in Braunschweig,” explains Professor Arno Kwade, Vice-President for Transfer and Innovation at TU Braunschweig and Spokesperson for the BLB Executive Board.

“The learning factory enables knowledge transfer along the value chain, from raw material extraction to recycling. It will become an important teaching and learning venue for the degree programmes ‘Battery and Hydrogen Technology’ (B.Sc.) and ‘Battery and Hydrogen Technologies’ (M.Sc.),” adds Professor Sabrina Zellmer, Professor of Battery and Fuel Cell Process Engineering at TU Braunschweig and at Fraunhofer IST.

Background: Batteries as a key technology for the circular production of the future

Batteries are a key technology for numerous forward-looking applications. They form the heart of modern everyday products. As demand for battery systems rises, so does the importance of sustainable production and recycling processes. Circular production approaches are becoming increasingly important. The aim is to keep materials and products in circulation for as long as possible, to use resources efficiently and to recover raw materials through reuse and recycling.

This also changes the requirements placed on industrial production systems. Solutions are needed that combine digitalisation, environmental sustainability and cost-effective production. Therefore, building a high-performing German and European battery ecosystem requires not only technological innovations, but above all people who can develop, operate and further refine these systems. This is precisely where the Learning Factory comes in: it creates a practical environment for the training and further education of highly qualified specialists and managers.

The Learning Factory also enables future experts outside the field of battery cell production to acquire key subjects and practical skills for modern industrial production systems. The methods and technologies learnt at the Learning Factory – such as production planning and control, the circular economy, data analysis, artificial intelligence and human-robot collaboration – can be applied to numerous other sectors and industrial applications.

Financing

The redesign of the learning factory took place as part of the “LEBAZ – Learning Factory for Circular Battery Production” project. The project received financing of around 3.7 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) under the “Battery Research” umbrella programme (FKZ 03XP0479). In addition, through collaboration with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and participating institutes, TU Braunschweig invested around 1.5 million euros from its own funds in the premises and technical equipment.

Partners of the Learning Factory

TU Braunschweig has established the Learning Factory in collaboration with the institutes of the Battery Labfactory Braunschweig (BLB), the Fraunhofer IST and other partners from academia, research, industry and professional associations. This strong network promotes interdisciplinary exchange and is set to grow further in order to advance the sustainable transfer of knowledge between research, teaching and industrial application in an even more targeted manner. As a member of the International Association of Learning Factories, TU Braunschweig is part of a global network of more than 30 university-based learning factories. This international alliance aims to design learning systems in such a way that the complex technical and organisational interrelationships of modern industrial environments are taught in a practical manner and the necessary skills are developed in a targeted way.

["post-83397","kb_presseinformation","type-kb_presseinformation","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

TU Braunschweig’s redesigned learning factory opens - TU Braunschweig | Blogs

<meta name="description" content="On 26 June 2026, Technische Universität Braunschweig opened its redesigned Learning Factory.
