Joint press release by the City of Braunschweig and TU Braunschweig<\/em><\/p>\n

How can Braunschweig respond to the challenges of climate change? The Co-Adapted Braunschweig (COABS) project team, together with participating initiatives, is inviting people to join a guided bike tour through Braunschweig on Saturday, 14 June. Participants will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the IGS Franzsches Feld. From there, they will cycle through Braunschweig on the \u2018Tour of Projects\u2019 for around three and a half hours, learning about six different pilot projects for climate adaptation. They will gain insights into the creative diversity and social dimensions of climate adaptation in Braunschweig. Participation is free of charge and no prior registration is required. All you need to bring with you is a roadworthy bicycle and sufficient food and drink.<\/p>\n

Five of eight neighbourhood pilot projects supported by COABS will be presented during the planned bike tour. The \u2018Sommerstra\u00dfe\u2019 project by the DRK neighbourhood development initiative Mitte-Ost will be the first stop at a possible location for Sommerstra\u00dfe. This will be followed by stops at the \u2018Heat Action Day 2025\u2019 organised by the Diakonische Gesellschaft Wohnen und Beraten, the \u2018Green Oasis\u2019 initiative of \u2018City for All\u2019 at the new sustainability centre in the city centre, and the \u2018Nature-based Gardening with Children\u2019 project organised by KiTa e.V. in H\u00f6fenstra\u00dfe. At the Freie Waldorfschule Braunschweig e.V., a student initiative will demonstrate how mushrooms can contribute to natural climate adaptation. The \u2018COABS Project Tour\u2019 will conclude with the M\u00f6hlkamp measure for climate-adapted street design in the \u2018Social City \u2013 Donauviertel\u2019 development area.<\/p>\n

Implementing climate adaptation together<\/h3>\n

All of the projects presented are exemplary in showing how climate adaptation can be implemented in practice in Braunschweig. The committed initiatives present their project ideas as well as tips and tricks for implementation and replication. The contributions range from raising awareness of heat protection and water-sensitive garden design to exciting environmental education projects in which schoolchildren become researchers.<\/p>\n

Under the motto \u2018Small spaces \u2013 big impact: shaping and implementing climate adaptation together!\u2019, the Co-Adapted Braunschweig project \u2013 developed under the leadership of the Department of Climate Protection and Strategic Environmental Planning of the City of Braunschweig and the ISU \u2013 Institute for Sustainable Urbanism at the TU Braunschweig \u2013 called for co-creative project ideas for adapting to the consequences of climate change in Braunschweig at the beginning of the year. After a jury of experts selected the best projects, eight were awarded prizes and will now receive implementation advice and financial support until the end of August. The neighbourhood pilot projects strengthen cooperation between the urban community, the administration and experts in the field of climate adaptation in Braunschweig. At the same time, neighbourhood networks are strengthened, which contribute to making private and public spaces sustainable and climate-adapted.<\/p>\n

Co-Adapted Braunschweig project<\/h3>\n

In the Co-Adapted Braunschweig (COABS) project, the project partners are taking on the challenge of working with various interest groups to develop an integrated strategy for adapting to the consequences of climate change for the city of Braunschweig by 2025. The project partners are the City of Braunschweig, Department of Environment, the ISU \u2013 Institute for Sustainable Urbanism and the Institute of Geoecology at TU Braunschweig.<\/p>\n
