Around 51,000 passenger and goods trains travel through the state every day. And rail traffic is growing – whether for transporting goods, going to work or going on holiday. From 15 to 17 September 2023, the industry will show what it is made of at the nationwide Tag der Schiene (Railway Day). In Braunschweig, the rail transport region Braunschweig will introduce itself on the Schlossplatz on 16 September as part of the European Mobility Week. Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig will also be there to present its degree programmes geared towards rail transport.<\/p>\n

Professor J\u00f6rn Pachl, head of the Institute for Railway Systems Engineering and Traffic Safety (IfEV)<\/a> at TU Braunschweig, is pleased about the central event: “The Braunschweig region reflects the whole diversity of the railway industry and railway systems in a special way within a small area. Several thousand employees work in the local railway sector. The world’s leading companies in the field of control and safety technology can be found here, as well as vehicle manufacturers and infrastructure operators. In addition, there are a large number of small and medium-sized companies such as testing and planning offices. Specific research facilities at TU Braunschweig and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) round off the field.”<\/p>\n

In view of the density of railway-specific companies and institutions, Pachl, who is also the dean of the transportation engineering course, sees the Braunschweig region as an ideal location for young people who are looking for a path into this professional field and want to study accordingly or undergo other professional training. “Internships, working student activities, excursions and writing final theses in cooperation with industry partners\u2014all this is possible here in many ways and combined with short distances. So is the subsequent entry into a career.”<\/p>\n

Spotlight on the degree programme Transportation Engineering<\/h3>\n

At its stand on Braunschweig’s Schlossplatz, TU Braunschweig will focus on the bachelor’s and master’s degree programme in transport engineering, which is part of the TU’s core area of mobility. Lecturers will provide information about courses, forms of learning and teaching materials and will be available to answer questions.<\/p>\n

Jan Peter Heemsoth, senior engineer at the Institute of Transport, Railway Construction and Operation (IVE)<\/a>, studied in this degree programme himself: “The degree programme offers students a variety of opportunities to focus on rail transport. At the same time, however, it is not a purely railway course of study, but places rail transport in the overall transport system.” Dr Gunnar Bosse from the Institute of Railway Systems Engineering and Traffic Safety adds that this aspect in particular is important, because rail transport should not be viewed in isolation. Although it is the backbone of public transport systems, it needs to interact with other modes of transport in the environmental network. That is why intermodal and interdisciplinary perspectives are important. “The degree programme Transportation Engineering is aimed at young people who view transport as a holistic, but intermodal system and in this sense want to ensure sustainable mobility for tomorrow.”<\/p>\n

However, Bosse also points out that entry into the professional field of rail transport at TU Braunschweig is of course also possible via other degree programmes. “Rail transport systems are interdisciplinary, very closely interlocked human-machine systems. Therefore, entry into the field of rail transport is of course also possible via traditional degree programmes such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. But there are also questions to be solved in the fields of psychology, social sciences and, in an increasingly interconnected world, linguistics, among others.”<\/p>\n
