In this interview, the GeDiMINT team explains how this is achieved, what specific insights have already been gained, and how GeDiMINT is helping to embed gender dimensions in research in the long term. We spoke to the scientific project leader, Juliette Wedl, and the project officers, Francine Meyer and Jan Büssers. The project is led by Jun.-Prof. Dr Henriette Bertram.

The GeDiMINT team: Juliette Wedl, Francine Meyer and Jan Büssers. Photo credit: Braunschweig Centre for Gender Studies

Ms Wedl, could you explain the project in simple terms?

The aim is to work with researchers from the fields of engineering, life sciences and natural sciences to determine whether gender and other dimensions of diversity are relevant to their research. If this is the case, we work together to develop suitable approaches for incorporating these aspects into their specific research projects. After all, technical solutions, products and scientific findings should benefit as many people as possible. Our project offers advice and support in this regard, for example, with research grant applications, in workshops or in the development of specific research ideas.

In short: we help to incorporate perspectives that have previously been given little consideration, thereby enhancing the quality and societal benefit of STEM research.

What exactly do gender dimensions mean in engineering, natural sciences and technology research?

What gender dimensions actually mean depends heavily on the specific research topic. In research, for example, one might ask whether technologies, products or processes are suited differently to various user groups, or whether certain perspectives and experiences have been missing from research to date.

We will be showcasing the diverse approaches available to address this at our conference “Transforming Cities” on 27 and 28 October 2026, which we are organising in collaboration with the core research area (CRA) “” and the collaborative project “ReSpace!“. National and international experts will use concrete examples to illustrate the role that gender dimensions can play in the circular economy, urban production, urban and spatial planning, and mobility. In addition, five projects at TU Braunschweig that we have funded will present their scientific results. Anyone interested is warmly invited – click here to register!

Perhaps you could give us one or two examples from TU Braunschweig?

Yes, of course. As part of the seed funding programme “Forschungsimpulse”, we funded the “DOLPHIN” project in 2025, a collaboration between the Institutes of Law and Intermodal Transport and Logistics Systems. The project investigated whether virtual tests of vehicle systems take sufficient account of user diversity.

Using parking assistance systems as an example, it became clear that physical or sensory impairments, age, height and gender influence how safe and easy the systems are perceived to be. It follows that, rather than relying – as has predominantly been the case – on reference data based on male norms and generalised user profiles, diversity should be understood as an integral part of functional safety and regulatory compliance and incorporated into the design of the tests.

Another example is a finding from a consultancy project: In 2023, during the application phase of the Transregio Collaborative Research Centre “SynTrac”, Professor Sabine Langer from the Institute of Acoustics and Dynamics approached us. The aim of “SynTrac” is to investigate how innovative aircraft designs could make flying more climate-neutral and efficient in future. The proposal included the question, to be clarified during the project, of whether people perceive and categorise sounds differently according to gender and age. This could impact the simulation of cabin noise.

What will the outcome look like at the end of the project?

Many of our initiatives are leading to STEM research projects at TU Braunschweig increasingly taking gender dimensions into account. Through consultations and research initiatives, a network of researchers is emerging who, in turn, pass on their knowledge within their own circles, thereby establishing a peer-to-peer advisory network.

However, as a structural development project, we are also testing measures and seeking ways to implement them at TU Braunschweig in the long term. This also underpins the development of the Toolbox as a platform. It will serve as a permanent pool of knowledge for research and become the treasure trove of our work.

Furthermore, we are collaborating with various service centres and implementing our programmes there. This is intended to continue even after the project ends in 2028. For instance, we ran a workshop for Research Services staff to train them in this approach. We are currently working together to advise on grant applications, a process which has proven its worth and which we hope will continue. The same applies to our advisory and workshop formats, which we have incorporated into the programme for early-career researchers.

Last but not least, we are developing outputs from our ongoing work to consolidate our findings. These findings are incorporated into the toolbox and range from academic publications and descriptions of our measures to evaluations and guidance documents. For example, our grant application advisory work has resulted in two guidance documents that are useful for both researchers and research advisers.

The Braunschweig Centre for Gender Studies will continue to provide advisory support following GeDiMINT and will remain available to answer questions regarding gender dimensions in the future.

What activities are coming up in the near future?

First of all, there is the conference, which we are very much looking forward to. On 4 November, we will be delivering an exciting presentation on “Gender Planning”, using Stuttgart as a case study. A workshop for PhD students and postdocs will also take place in November. Furthermore, 11 October was the deadline for the next round of research grant applications – we are now selecting projects and preparing for their launch. We are also constantly receiving research proposals for consultation and would love this to continue.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone who is curious or has questions or needs further information.

Thank you very much for the interview.

["post-85715","kb_magazin","type-kb_magazin","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","kb_cat_magazin-research","kb_tags-diversity-en

An interview with the GeDiMINT team on gender dimensions - TU Braunschweig | Blogs

<meta name="description" content="How can gender and diversity dimensions be integrated into STEM research, and why is this important?
