How can we protect our coastlines in the face of climate change while ensuring they are used sustainably? How can the expansion of renewable energy be reconciled with the protection of marine ecosystems? And what solutions does Niedersachsen need in the face of rising sea levels and increasing extreme weather events? These were the questions addressed at the “MeerZukunft” Parliamentary Evening organised by the <\/b>German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM)<\/b><\/a> on 6 October 2026 in Hannover. Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig was also in attendance, contributing its expertise in coastal engineering and marine construction.<\/b><\/p>\n

Representatives from the worlds of science, politics, business and civil society came together at a social event to discuss the challenges and prospects facing the oceans and coasts. The key message of the evening, as conveyed in the presentations by various DAM member institutions, was that science provides guidance and practical knowledge on the basis of which politics, business and society can make decisions that are effective in the long term \u2013 and thereby also justify and support the necessary innovations.<\/p>\n

In his presentation, Professor Nils Goseberg, Head of the field of Hydromechanics, Coastal Engineering and Marine Structures at the Leichtwei\u00df Institute for Hydraulic Engineering<\/a> at TU Braunschweig and currently Managing Director of the Coastal Research Centre<\/a>, spoke on the topic of \u201cEnergy from the Sea \u2013 Shaping Transformation in an Environmentally Sustainable and Innovative Way\u201d. The Coastal Research Centre is a joint institution of TU Braunschweig and Leibniz University Hannover, which has been a member of the German Alliance for Marine Research since 2020.<\/p>\n

In his keynote address on energy generation from the sea, Professor Goseberg focused in particular on the opportunities and risks associated with this rapidly advancing technological development: \u201cThere is great potential for German solutions in forward-looking sectors such as the offshore wind or hydrogen industries, and it is essential to work hand in hand with the scientific community to ensure the lowest possible impact on the environment in which construction takes place.\u201d The concept of knowledge transfer, which is so crucial today, is particularly evident in the interaction between science and industry here.<\/p>\n

For Niedersachsen, the topics discussed this evening are of central importance: \u201cAs a coastal state, Niedersachsen bears a special responsibility for the protection of our seas. We feel the effects of climate change, such as global warming and species loss, very directly here. This makes it all the more important to prioritise environmental and climate protection,\u201d explained Dr Tanja Meyer (MdL), Vice-President of the Niedersachsen State Parliament.<\/p>\n

Professor Joachim Schachtner, State Secretary at the Niedersachsen Ministry of Science and Culture, emphasised the relevance of marine research for the state of Niedersachsen: the preservation of biodiversity, coastal protection and adaptation to rising sea levels are not theoretical questions, but concrete challenges. With its scientific results, the DAM helps policymakers not only to observe changes, but also to lay the foundations for strategic decisions.<\/p>\n

For TU Braunschweig, too, the transfer of scientific results into policy and society is an important part of its work. The Coastal Research Centre combines fundamental research with application-oriented research questions drawn from practical experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
