He came to Germany in 2007 and initially worked on industrial issues in the aviation sector. He later combined this experience with academic research and scientific work at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

David Quero Martín is the new professor at the Institute of Aircraft Structures and Lightweight Construction. Photo credits: Silja Klemenz/TU Braunschweig

Professor Quero Martín, why did you choose TU Braunschweig?

Aeroelasticity is a highly interdisciplinary field of research that brings together aerodynamics, structural dynamics, control systems and experimentation. Braunschweig offers an exceptional environment for linking these fields together – from fundamental research and sophisticated numerical simulations right through to large-scale tests and practical applications in aerospace. I look forward to further developing these connections while also contributing to the education of the next generation of aerospace engineers.

What exactly do you focus on in your research?

My research focuses on aeroelasticity – in other words, the question of what happens when aerodynamic forces act upon and interact with flexible structures: at first glance, an aeroplane wing appears rigid, but in fact it bends and twists during flight. This alters the flow of air around the wing, which in turn influences the forces acting upon it. In most cases, this interaction poses no problem and can even be utilised deliberately. Under certain conditions, however, it can lead to undesirable vibrations or even instabilities such as what is known as flutter. Our task is to understand, predict and, increasingly, actively influence these interactions. The aim is to make aerospace systems safer, lighter and more efficient.

What will be the core research areas you will be focusing on at TU Braunschweig?

A central theme of my future research is the ‘Aeroelastic Integration Hub’. The idea is to no longer consider simulation, experimentation and control systems in sequence, but to think of them as an integrated system from the outset. This integration can be very useful for the development of future aerospace systems as well as other aeroelastic applications.

One focus will be on predicting and influencing aeroelastic phenomena such as flutter, buffeting and dynamic loads. Another focus is on establishing a closer link between simulation and experimentation, for example through wind tunnel, ground and flight tests, digital twins and the quantification of uncertainties.

Furthermore, I aim to extend these methods beyond conventional aircraft to new configurations and operating ranges. These include highly flexible wings, hydrogen- and electrically-powered aircraft, helicopters, propeller and open-rotor systems, high-speed aircraft, as well as applications in turbomachinery and wind energy.

Prof. David Quero Martín at his appointment ceremony with Angela Ittel, President of TU Braunschweig, and Prof. Jens Friedrichs, Head of the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion and Fluid Machinery. Photo credits: Silja Klemenz/TU Braunschweig

What motivated you to conduct research in this field?

What has fascinated me about aeroelasticity from the very beginning is that it cannot be understood from the perspective of just a single discipline. Steady-state and transient aerodynamics, structural dynamics and control engineering are all intertwined. A change in one part of the system can have an impact on the entire system. It is precisely this work at the interfaces between different disciplines that has always held a particular interest for me.

What continues to motivate me to this day is the opportunity to link fundamental scientific questions with very specific applications. Methods that initially emerge as research ideas can later actually contribute to the design, testing or admission of a real aeroplane. It is precisely this combination of scientific curiosity and practical impact that makes the field so appealing to me.

How would you describe your day-to-day work in three keywords?

Research – collaboration – leadership. These three terms describe my day-to-day work very well: developing scientific ideas, bringing people and disciplines together, and creating the framework conditions in which teams can carry out excellent research. In my new role, the link between TU Braunschweig and DLR will play an important role in all three areas.

Thank you very much!

["post-85440","kb_magazin","type-kb_magazin","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","kb_cat_magazin-personalities","kb_tags-aviation

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
