With a scientific conference (2 June 2023) and a Public Day (3 June 2023) on Schlossplatz, three scientific institutions, together with the city administration, want to bring Braunschweig’s research and innovations in the field of autonomous and connected driving more into the public eye, provide information about results and perspectives, and engage in discussion with experts and the public.<\/p>\n

Symposium: “Vernetzte und automatisierte Mobilit\u00e4t im Kontext der Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung\u201c (Networked and Automated Mobility in the Context of Urban and Transport Planning)<\/h3>\n

As a kick-off, the conference “Autonomes Fahren und Stadtstruktur\u201c<\/a> (Autonomous Driving and Urban Structure) on 2 June 2023 at the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen<\/a> at TU Braunschweig offers an exciting and varied programme around the mobility of the future.<\/p>\n

Initial results and perspectives will be presented in short lectures and a panel discussion. Participants will also be able to drive autonomous cars themselves or teach model vehicles how to drive autonomously through a course in one of the practical workshops.<\/p>\n

The research infrastructure of TU Braunschweig and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Research Airport can be visited during the conference. There will be presentations of test vehicles that will travel through the region in future as a rolling supply practice, a laboratory environment for virtual reality simulations and various test benches and demonstrators that will be used for the development, analysis and validation of automated driving functions.<\/p>\n

“Public Day” action day on Schlossplatz offers hands-on science<\/h3>\n

On Saturday, 3 June, the Mobility Days will open to the public with an open-air exhibition on autonomous driving on Schlossplatz. Under the motto “Braunschweig drives autonomously: Information – Inspiration – Interaction”, Braunschweig’s potential in the field of autonomous and connected driving is to become even better known. For years, Braunschweig has been intensively researching how vehicles can network, i.e. communicate with each other, and how this can lead to greater road safety for all road users in the long term.<\/p>\n

Visitors can expect hands-on activities and presentations that allow them to experience the topic of autonomous driving. For example, they can get to know a virtual bus stop or hear how sound researchers are working on the perfect soundscape for autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n

The “Public Day”<\/a> will be accompanied by a diverse stage programme. A special highlight: At the “Public Day” there will be the opportunity to take a seat in a car that is already driving autonomously. With a bit of luck, participants in the raffle will have the opportunity to drive autonomously on Braunschweig’s roads together with scientists from the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) and the German Aerospace Centre. Visitors can also experience what the world looks like from the perspective of a highly automated vehicle from the National Metrology Institute (PTB) or take the wheel themselves and drive through a model course. The NFF presents how a car is transformed into a “rolling precautionary practice” that determines how drivers are doing – and reacts to it. The DLR_School_Lab Braunschweig school laboratory makes the research of the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems literally tangible: In this experiment, presented for the first time, small vehicles are to be programmed so that they not only recognise the course of the road, but also their surroundings and react to them.<\/p>\n

The new format “Braunschweig Mobility Days – Autonom und Digital\u201c (Autonomous and Digital) was conceived and planned by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) of Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig (TU) and the National Metrology Institute (PTB) together with the Department of Culture and Science of the city administration.<\/p>\n
