Since the first set-up in 1931, researchers have been working at great expense to achieve ever higher resolutions. The most powerful electron microscope at the TU Braunschweig, the <a href=\"https:\/\/magazin.tu-braunschweig.de\/en\/m-post\/how-long-is-a-picometer-hr-tem\/\">TEM<\/a>, is therefore completely sealed off from mechanical vibrations (such as trams rattling past) and magnetic fields (such as the earth&#8217;s magnetic field) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu-braunschweig.de\/en\/mib\/lena\">LENA<\/a> research centre.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50332\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magazin.tu-braunschweig.de\/en\/bild_des_monat_1500\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50332\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50332\" src=\"https:\/\/magazin.tu-braunschweig.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Bild_des_Monat_1500-850x567.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The TEM allows a look at the atomic structure of the semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN). Picture credits: Daesung Park\/TU Braunschweig<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our picture of the month gives an insight into what the super device is capable of: the atomic structure of the semiconductor <a href=\"https:\/\/magazin.tu-braunschweig.de\/en\/m-post\/breaking-gan\/\">gallium nitride<\/a> is finely lined up. As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantumfrontiers.de\/en\/\">QuantumFrontiers<\/a> cluster of excellence and <a href=\"https:\/\/qvls.de\/en\/launch-page-english\/\">Quantum Valley Lower Saxony<\/a>, researchers from TU Braunschweig and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt are jointly developing tiny blue LEDs from the material gallium nitride. During the complex LED production in the clean rooms of the Institute of Semiconductor Technology, gallium nitride is repeatedly fabricated, coated and etched. The researchers find out how good the next LED generation has become primarily through electron microscopy.
