When Things Become Unclear:
\nHow Uncertainty Produces Knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What happens when things are not immediately clear? And how can moments of uncertainty become a source of insight? These questions lie at the heart of Fahim Mohammadi\u2019s inaugural lecture.
\nThe lecture begins with the idea that uncertainty is not simply a deficit to be eliminated as quickly as possible. It can also be productive: a condition that sharpens perception, gives rise to new questions, and opens up forms of knowledge that do not emerge from ready-made answers alone. Starting from ordinary spatial situations, Mohammadi argues that design does not begin only once problems have been clearly defined. It often begins earlier, in careful observation, in acts of distinction, and in the attempt to transform ambiguity into a more precise form of understanding.
\nIn this sense, the lecture also addresses a broader question of contemporary society: how we engage with openness, complexity, and ambivalence in a world increasingly shaped by speed, clarity, and immediacy. Design appears here not merely as the shaping of form, but as a way of putting more exacting questions to the world and of opening new perspectives on it.<\/p>\n

Short Biography<\/strong>
\nFahim Mohammadi has been Professor and Head of the Institute for Methodologies of Design and Representation at Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig since September 2025. Before joining TU Braunschweig, he served for ten years as Professor of Design Foundations and Experimental Design at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. His research and teaching focus on the question of how design and representation can be understood as modes of knowledge production. A particular emphasis of his work lies in architectural foundation teaching: in training perception, developing design attitudes, and exploring how observations can be translated into forms that open up new access for others. Beyond the university, Mohammadi is actively engaged in shaping discourse in higher arts education at the European level. Since 2022, he has been an elected member of the Representative Board of the European League of Institutes of the Arts, where he has been particularly involved in the discursive development of the ELIA Academies. At TU Braunschweig, he is also developing the L\u00c6B, the Laboratory for Aesthetic Knowledge Production and Transfer. One of its central concerns is how phenomena outside design can reframe the way we think about design, and how aesthetic processes can create new forms of access.<\/p>\n

Was geschieht, wenn Dinge nicht sofort eindeutig sind? Und was kann gerade aus solchen Momenten der Unsicherheit entstehen?\u00a0 Diesen Fragen widmet sich Fahim Mohammadi in seiner Antrittsvorlesung.
\nIm Mittelpunkt steht die \u00dcberlegung, dass Unsch\u00e4rfe nicht nur ein Mangel ist, der m\u00f6glichst schnell beseitigt werden muss. Sie kann auch ein produktiver Ausgangspunkt sein: f\u00fcr genauere Wahrnehmung, f\u00fcr neue Fragen und f\u00fcr Formen des Wissens, die nicht allein aus fertigen Antworten entstehen. Ausgehend von allt\u00e4glichen r\u00e4umlichen Situationen zeigt Mohammadi, dass Gestaltung nicht erst dort beginnt, wo Probleme klar benannt sind. Sie beginnt oft fr\u00fcher: im genauen Hinsehen, im Unterscheiden und in dem Versuch, aus Unklarheit eine Form von Erkenntnis zu gewinnen.
\nDie Vorlesung ber\u00fchrt damit auch eine breitere gesellschaftliche Frage: wie wir in einer Gegenwart, die stark auf Eindeutigkeit, Beschleunigung und Verf\u00fcgbarkeit ausgerichtet ist, mit Offenheit, Ambivalenz und Komplexit\u00e4t umgehen. Gestaltung erscheint hier nicht nur als Formgebung, sondern als eine Weise, Welt genauer zu befragen und neue Perspektiven auf sie zu gewinnen.<\/p>\n

Kurzlebenslauf<\/strong>
\nFahim Mohammadi ist seit September 2025 Professor und Leiter des Instituts f\u00fcr Gestaltungsmethodik und Darstellung an der Technischen Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig. Zuvor war er zehn Jahre lang Professor f\u00fcr Grundlagen der Gestaltung und Experimentelles Entwerfen an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden K\u00fcnste Stuttgart. In Forschung und Lehre besch\u00e4ftigt er sich mit der Frage, wie Gestaltung und Darstellung als Formen der Erkenntnisproduktion verstanden werden k\u00f6nnen. Ein Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit liegt auf der architektonischen Grundlehre: auf der Schulung von Wahrnehmung, auf der Entwicklung gestalterischer Haltungen und auf der Frage, wie Beobachtungen in eine Form \u00fcbersetzt werden k\u00f6nnen, die auch f\u00fcr andere neue Zug\u00e4nge er\u00f6ffnet. Dar\u00fcber hinaus engagiert sich Mohammadi auf europ\u00e4ischer Ebene in der Higher Arts Education. Seit 2022 ist er gew\u00e4hltes Mitglied des Representative Board der European League of Institutes of the Arts und pr\u00e4gt dort insbesondere Diskurse und Formate im Umfeld der ELIA Academies mit. An der TU Braunschweig baut er zudem das L\u00c6B auf, das Labor f\u00fcr \u00e4sthetische Wissensproduktion & Transfer. Dort geht es auch darum, wie Ph\u00e4nomene au\u00dferhalb der Gestaltung den Blick auf Gestaltung neu rahmen und wie \u00e4sthetische Prozesse neue Zug\u00e4nge er\u00f6ffnen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n
