\u201c by Prof. Dr. Christian Sieben<\/strong><\/h3>\nChristian’s group at the HZI investigates the cell biology of viral infections. Despite their simple structure and small size, viruses are remarkably efficient at penetrating, infecting, and modifying host cells. Our team studies the interactions of respiratory RNA viruses with host cells using advanced microscopy techniques. The inaugural lecture will showcase the power of imaging techniques in enhancing our understanding of virus infections. I will present the fundamentals of virus infection biology, newly developed methods from our group, and current examples of our research.<\/p>\n
Bio:<\/strong> Christian Sieben studied biology at TU Darmstadt, specializing in physiology and cell biology. After completing his diploma thesis in plant cell biology, he pursued his doctorate at Humboldt University in Berlin, where he developed microscopic methods to study respiratory virus infections at the single-cell level. Subsequently, he moved to EPFL in Switzerland to work on super-resolution microscopy, which allows him to investigate virus-cell interactions at the scale of individual viruses. Since 2020, Christian Sieben has been leading the Nano Infection Biology (NIBI) research group at HZI in Braunschweig.<\/p>\n—-<\/p>\n
Inaugural Lecture \u201e<\/strong>Measurements for the Masses or Metrology for the life Sciences” by <\/strong>Gavin O\u2019Connor<\/h3>\nWith over 20 years\u2019 experience in chemical metrology, I believe that traceability is a proven and cost-effective method to achieve greater comparability of measurement results. Increasing global mobility, the pursuit of personalised medicine and the growing use of big data, requires a much greater effort to improve the comparability of clinical laboratory measurement results. A well-established network and infrastructure has been established for a small number of priority clinical biomarkers. However, the broader use of metrology in biosciences is still relatively new.
\nThe lecture will outline the development of reference methods procedures and established simple routes to achieving SI traceability for small metabolites and protein biomarkers. This will be followed by an insight into the new and emerging challenges in extending conventional metrology approaches to new measurement technologies. These capabilities can be used to find simple approaches to improve the reproducibility of biochemical measurement results. The integration of metrology solutions into biochemical research is central to engineering biology and the expected benefits that this new approach will bring to our understanding and treatment a person\u2019s health.<\/p>\n
Bio:<\/strong> Gavin O\u2019Connor is Head of Department for Biochemistry at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and Professor of Biochemical Metrology at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He began his studies in Analytical Chemistry at Athlone Institute of Technology before moving to the University of Plymouth where he obtained his PhD in mass spectrometry. Having previously worked at LGC in the UK and the European Commission\u2019s, Joint research Centre, his research has focused the provision of metrologically traceable results for the characterisation of reference materials using IDMS. The focus of the Department of Biochemistry at PTB is on the development of high accuracy measurement procedures for clinically relevant targets.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Antrittsvorlesung “Measurements for the Masses or Metrology for the life Sciences”
\nvon <\/strong>Gavin O\u2019Connor<\/h3>\nMit mehr als 20 Jahren Erfahrung in der chemischen Metrologie bin ich davon \u00fcberzeugt, dass die R\u00fcckf\u00fchrbarkeit eine bew\u00e4hrte und kosteneffektive Methode ist, um eine bessere Vergleichbarkeit von Messergebnissen zu erreichen. Die zunehmende globale Mobilit\u00e4t, das Streben nach personalisierter Medizin und die wachsende Nutzung von Big Data erfordern viel gr\u00f6\u00dfere Anstrengungen, um die Vergleichbarkeit von Messergebnissen klinischer Labore zu verbessern. F\u00fcr eine kleine Anzahl vorrangiger klinischer Biomarker wurde ein gut etabliertes Netzwerk und eine entsprechende Infrastruktur geschaffen. Die breitere Anwendung der Metrologie in den Biowissenschaften ist jedoch noch relativ neu.
\nDer Vortrag wird die Entwicklung von Referenzmethoden und einfache Wege zur Erreichung der SI- R\u00fcckf\u00fchrbarkeit f\u00fcr kleine Metaboliten und Protein-Biomarker skizzieren. Anschlie\u00dfend erhalten Sie einen Einblick in die neuen und sich abzeichnenden Herausforderungen bei der Ausweitung konventioneller metrologischer Ans\u00e4tze auf neue Messtechnologien. Diese F\u00e4higkeiten k\u00f6nnen genutzt werden, um einfache Ans\u00e4tze zur Verbesserung der Reproduzierbarkeit von biochemischen Messergebnissen zu finden. Die Integration von Metrologiel\u00f6sungen in die biochemische Forschung ist von zentraler Bedeutung f\u00fcr die Ingenieurbiologie und die erwarteten Vorteile, die dieser neue Ansatz f\u00fcr unser Verst\u00e4ndnis und die Behandlung der Gesundheit des Menschen mit sich bringt.<\/p>\n
Zur Person<\/strong>
\nGavin O’Connor ist Fachbereichsleiter f\u00fcr Biochemie an der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt (PTB) und Professor f\u00fcr Biochemische Metrologie an der Technischen Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig. Er begann sein Studium der Analytischen Chemie am Athlone Institute of Technology, bevor er an die University of Plymouth wechselte, wo er im Bereich der Massenspektrometrie promovierte. Nachdem er zuvor bei LGC in Gro\u00dfbritannien und der Gemeinsamen Forschungsstelle der Europ\u00e4ischen Kommission gearbeitet hatte, konzentrierte sich seine Forschung auf die Bereitstellung von metrologisch r\u00fcckf\u00fchrbaren Ergebnissen f\u00fcr die Charakterisierung von Referenzmaterialien unter Verwendung von IDMS.
