Federica Ferraro"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Antrittsvorlesung &#8220;Flying into the future: the decarbonization revolution in aviation propulsion&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Climate change imposes a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and urges for a swift adoption of carbon-neutral technologies to minimize pollution and preserve life on our planet. Aviation propulsion, as a hard-to-decarbonize sector, requires a multifaceted approach to address diverse aircraft missions. Significant research efforts and innovative technologies are required to rapidly achieve this ambitious goal. Not only net-neutral carbon emission must be achieved but also a significant reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), unburned hydrocarbons, and soot particles to minimize the detrimental impact of commercial aviation on both local and global air quality.<br \/>\nCarbon-neutral and carbon-free energy carriers such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and hydrogen, and innovative propulsion concepts like electric systems are currently being investigated as promising sustainable pathways. While electric propulsion will be a game-changer technology for short-range flights, gas turbine propulsion will remain essential for mid-to-long-range aircraft.<br \/>\nThis lecture focuses on thermo-chemical energy conversion from SAF and hydrogen, addressing their advances, challenges, and perspectives in combustion-driven propulsion systems for aviation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CV<\/strong><br \/>\nFederica Ferraro is a Junior Professor for Alternative Aviation Propulsion Systems at the Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig. Her research focuses on numerical modeling and simulation of turbulent multiphase reacting flows. Particularly, she is interested in the combustion of sustainable energy carriers, including hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels, to reduce emissions and develop climate-neutral, efficient technologies for the energy and transportation sectors.<br \/>\nShe earned her degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Rome \u201cLa Sapienza\u201d and obtained her PhD in 2017 from the Universit\u00e4t der Bundeswehr M\u00fcnchen. Following her Ph.D. studies, she was a post-doctoral researcher at two institutions: the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute for Propulsion Technology in Cologne (2016-2019) and the Institute for Simulation of reactive Thermo-Fluid Systems (STFS) of the Technische Universit\u00e4t Darmstadt (2019-2023), where she became research group leader in 2021. In 2023, Federica Ferraro was appointed an Athene Young Investigator at TU Darmstadt. Since May 2023 she has joined the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery (IFAS) at TU Braunschweig.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Der Klimawandel erfordert eine drastische Reduktion von Treibhausgasemissionen und dr\u00e4ngt auf eine rasche Einf\u00fchrung kohlenstoffneutraler Technologien, um die Umweltverschmutzung zu verringern und das Leben auf unserem Planeten zu erhalten. Die Luftfahrt als ein schwer dekarbonisierbarer Sektor ben\u00f6tigt einen vielschichtigen Ansatz, um die verschiedenen Anforderungen und Aufgaben der Flugzeuge zu erf\u00fcllen. Erhebliche Forschungsanstrengungen und innovative Technologien sind erforderlich, um dieses ehrgeizige Ziel schnell zu realisieren. Es muss nicht nur eine Netto-Neutralit\u00e4t der Kohlenstoffemissionen erreicht werden, sondern auch eine deutliche Reduzierung von Stickoxiden (NOx), unverbrannten Kohlenwasserstoffen und Ru\u00dfpartikeln, um die sch\u00e4dlichen Auswirkungen der kommerziellen Luftfahrt auf die lokale und globale Luftqualit\u00e4t zu minimieren.<br \/>\nKohlenstoffneutrale und kohlenstofffreie Energietr\u00e4ger wie nachhaltige Flugtreibstoffe (SAF) und Wasserstoff sowie innovative Antriebskonzepte wie elektrische Systeme werden derzeit als vielversprechende nachhaltige Wege untersucht. W\u00e4hrend der Elektroantrieb f\u00fcr Kurzstreckenfl\u00fcge eine neue Technologie sein wird, bleibt der Gasturbinenantrieb f\u00fcr Mittel- und Langstreckenflugzeuge unverzichtbar.<br \/>\nDieser Vortrag konzentriert sich auf die thermochemische Energieumwandlung von SAF und Wasserstoff und behandelt deren Fortschritte, Herausforderungen und Perspektiven in verbrennungsbasierten Antriebssystemen f\u00fcr die Luftfahrt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zur Person<\/strong><br \/>\nFederica Ferraro ist Juniorprofessorin f\u00fcr Alternative Antriebssysteme f\u00fcr die Luftfahrt an der Technischen Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der numerischen Modellierung und Simulation von turbulenten, mehrphasigen reaktiven Str\u00f6mungen. Insbesondere interessiert sie sich f\u00fcr die Verbrennung nachhaltiger Energietr\u00e4ger, einschlie\u00dflich Wasserstoff, Ammoniak und synthetischer Kraftstoffe, um Emissionen zu reduzieren und klimaneutrale, effiziente Technologien f\u00fcr den Energie- und Transportsektor zu entwickeln.<br \/>\nSie studierte Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik an der Universit\u00e4t Rom &#8220;La Sapienza&#8221; und promovierte im Jahr 2017 an der Universit\u00e4t der Bundeswehr M\u00fcnchen. Nach ihrer Promotion war sie als Postdoc an zwei Institutionen t\u00e4tig: am Deutschen Zentrum f\u00fcr Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Institut f\u00fcr Antriebstechnik in K\u00f6ln (2016-2019) und am Institut f\u00fcr Simulation reaktiver Thermo-Fluid Systeme (STFS) der Technischen Universit\u00e4t Darmstadt (2019-2023), an der sie 2021 Forschungsgruppenleiterin wurde. Im Jahr 2023 wurde Federica Ferraro zum Athene Young Investigator an der TU Darmstadt ernannt.
