Over the past 60 years, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has undergone a successful transition from an emerging method into an increasingly established method in research, practice and education. Its development and application have allowed tackling an increasingly wide range of scientific and practical problems. At present, CFD has rightfully obtained its leading role in addressing every one of the grand societal challenges: health, energy, climate, security, transport and aging. This presentation shows some examples related to each of these challenges. The main focus is on health, where we focus on mitigating the destructive impact of COVID19 and potential future respiratory pandemics. In addition, also other topics are addressed, including heat waves in cities as amplified by climate change, safety of ship navigation in ports, helicopter landing on oil ships, motorcycles in cycling races, air pollution in cities, air curtains at building entrances and wind gusts on train platforms. Some future perspectives on the important role of CFD for these and other applications are provided.<\/p>\n
