The talk is part of the interdisciplinary lecture series “Cooperative Traffic Management” of the DFG Research Training Group SocialCars. Abstract: Human-centered research on highly-automated driving has mainly focused on two central topics: (a) the individual preconditions for driving an automated car, and (b) the impact of the driver\u2019s state and behavior during automated driving on the transition of control. Studies addressing the first topic are concerned with the influence of individual preconditions, such as drivers\u2019 trust, personality traits and attitudes, on the intention to use an automated vehicle. They are conducted either as online surveys or experiments in driving simulators. In contrast, we conducted an experiment with a Tesla Model S in real traffic to find out under which conditions drivers deploy the automation and how this might be related to their individual characteristics and experiences. In most studies on the second topic, the vehicle initiates a take-over while the driver is distracted during automated driving. Very little is known about situations in which a non-distracted driver deliberately initiates a take-over, e.g., because he or she does not trust the automation or feels that the system does not react adequately to a traffic situation. We address this issue in six simulator experiments and in two field studies which are parts of a DFG-funded project.
